Encryption is the process of changing text-based information into a state in which a key is required in order to read the information. The process is completed using a cipher or algorithm. The data can only be rendered legible again with the use of a key that can reverse the process. Encryption is beneficial when data is being stored that contains private data. Information such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth are data that might be encrypted if kept in a database.
