Discuss the differences between DRCs and EMs. What impact does each of these alternative incarceration programs have on recidivism?
What will be an ideal response?
DRCs include services such as education, mental health and/or substance abuse treatments, and case management. Regular reporting is required as is drug and/or alcohol screening. Offenders are monitored through a GPS when sanctioned with an EM. There is no regular monitoring or screening; however, EMs are often used in conjunction with DRCs. DRCs have been shown to reduce recidivism but this is not conclusive with EMs, most likely because EMs are often paired with DRCs.
