1. Counselor identity – Conceptualization of who individuals are as counselors. It is important because it serves as a reference point for counselors’ roles and decisions within the profession. This develops as counselors integrate their attitudes toward professional responsibilities, ethical standards, professional membership, and personal learning styles.

2. Counselor self-efficacy – Relates to confidence and describes one’s beliefs about his or her level of ability to practice different aspects of counseling.

3. Counselor cognitive complexity – Research has shown benefits for counselors who are more cognitively complex. For example, counselors that are more cognitively complex are better able to identify and integrate ambiguous pieces of information to better understand the client’s needs, relational dynamics, and treatment, remain objective, form complex clinical hypotheses, avoid stereotyping, and have increased confidence.
