A delta is a mass of sediment that is deposited where a river slows down as it enters a large body of water such as a lake or the ocean. When a stream reaches the coast, the gradient is usually low and stream velocity slow. Only the small sediments remain in the stream at that point so deltas are deposits of finer sediments including gravels and sand.
