How are the various developmental/life course (DLC) theory perspectives similar and different from one another? What are the core ideas of life course theory perspectives?
What will be an ideal response?
Possible answer: All developmental/life course (DLC) theories take note of the variations in criminal activity across age and try to explain initiation, persistence, and desistance in crime (perhaps through stages). At the core, DLC criminology is concerned with three primary issues: the development of offending, identification of risk factors unique to individuals of varying ages, and the effects of experienced events on how one's offending behavior does or does not develop. Catalano and Hawkin focus on the stages of social bonding through an individual's life, LaBlanc adds in a focus of personality development in context of the social environment, Thornberry and Krohn focus their explanation for crime on how other aspects of life develop and change (or not) over time, Sampson and Laub adapt Hirschi's social bonding theory at different stages of an individual's life, and, finally, Moffitt's theory accounts for two typologies of offending – the adolescent limited and life course persistent offender. As gleaned from above, most DLC theories discussed are focused on the bonding of an individual to others and/or to society and how this changes over time.
