Issues came to a head between Indian authorities and the Sikhs in 1984 when Indian military forces entered the Sikhs' most sacred site, the Golden Temple, and engaged in a bloody battle with armed militants. Thousands of people were killed. Small groups of Sikhs formed terror cells that targeted Indian security forces, unsympathetic journalists, and the majority community of Sikhs who called for the restoration of peace. A few months after the Golden Temple raid, the Sikh bodyguards of Indira Gandhi, the prime minister of India, assassinated her.
