Wavelength affects what electromagnetic energy humans can see, and it also affects how it appears to us. Humans are able to see only certain wavelengths, known as visible light. Visible light has wavelengths from 400 to 700 nm. The shortest wavelength we can see is about 400 nm, which we perceive as violet. Shorter wavelengths, known as ultraviolet, are detectable by some other species. The longest wavelength we can see is about 700 nm, which we perceive as red.
