Why has probation proved to be a successful alternative to incarceration? How can it get even better?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but students should be able to explain that probation has proven to be a good alternative because it can help to rehabilitate and/or treat the offender more successfully. It can help the offender maintain some dignity and a life to call his or her own. It can prevent an offender from becoming institutionalized or resentful, thereby leading to great problems. It can save a tremendous amount of money and resources. Students are welcome to suggest any ways that probation could be improved upon and as it is still a work in progress, there should be many creative options and ideas to choose from.
