Describe a means by which art can serve as an emotional outlet for older adults who have been diagnosed with a progressive illness?
What will be an ideal response?
Art therapy relies on projective techniques and visual representation s of emotions such as joy or fear. Studies demonstrate art therapy is associated with a biological response - such as a lowered blood pressure and increase in pleasure seeking hormones. Older adults who are diagnosed with progressive illness may use the creation of art or even the viewing of particular photographs/paintings etc. to stimulate the expression of a range of emotions over the course of the illness. A skilled art therapist can guide a person to describe (verbally or behaviorally) the emotions associated with different aspects of the disease. For instance, series of drawings over the course of the disease may reflect alterations in sense of self through the use of different details/colors etc.
