Describe how addiction is viewed through the lens of the disease model.
What will be an ideal response?
Addiction is a primary, enduring, and progressive disease that may include genetic susceptibility. Addiction is considered to be a physical disease. If left unchecked, addiction will lead to disability or death. There are many symptoms of addiction such as life problems (e.g., unsuccessful attempts at cutting down on drinking and drug use, persistent use to the point of intoxication) as well as other behavioral and emotional indicators. It is believed that there is no cure for the disease. Abstinence is viewed as the only viable option for recovery.
