Answers will vary, but must include (1) arrange setting to include materials the child is interested in; (2) wait for the initiation of the child; (3) ask for advanced verbal expression; (4) provide the child the object s/he initiates. Answers may include the following: Incidental teaching is used to facilitate the student’s use of language. It occurs within the context of an interaction between two people in a natural environment. In incidental teaching, the student specifies an individual reinforcer, the teacher prompts a language response from the student, and then the teacher reinforces the language response. For example, if a child wants to have a piece of fruit, and we want her to make a verbal request for the fruit instead of her pointing and grunting to get it. We can tell her to, “say ‘orange’” and when she says it bring her the orange. This interaction increases the likelihood that she will maintain a language response after several incidences.
