Give an example of the PRECEDE-PROCEED in action and discuss its various phases
Due to its versatility and theoretical foundation, the PRECEDE-PROCEED model has been used in nearly 1,000 published programs. One such program is the My Body Knows When dietary intervention. Aimed at teaching military spouses the principles of intuitive eating and physical activity as a means of improving diet and reducing body weight, the program used the PRECEDE-PROCEED model to design, implement, and evaluate the intervention. During the PRECEDE phase, the researchers used surveys to assess the social, epidemiological, behavioral and environmental, educational and organizational, and administrative and policy measures and determinants. Additional epidemiologic information was collected using anthropometric measures such as BMI. The researchers ranked the determinants identified during the five assessment phases and were then able to establish the program objectives and choose intervention components to correspond with the objectives. For example, during the social assessment (Phase I), it was discovered that the top two life stressors reported by participants related to body image and weight concerns. Therefore, a program objective and corresponding intervention activity were designed to improve body image.
In the PROCEED portion of the model, the intervention was implemented and evaluated. During the process evaluation, participant attrition and satisfaction were assessed, and the information was used to adjust the program accordingly. For example, participants reported they could not attend the intervention sessions because of child-care issues, so the researchers began offering free child-care services during the times of the intervention meetings. The impact evaluation assessed the effects of the intervention immediately upon its completion and included surveying participants about their body image or attitudes toward food and comparing responses to pre-intervention data. Finally, the outcome evaluation assessed whether the intervention achieved its overall goal of improving diet content and reducing body weight. This was performed through surveys and anthropometric measures.
