Discuss the evidence that positive high-quality leader-member exchange relationships contributes to performance?
What will be an ideal response?
A meta-analysis by Gerstner and Day (1997) provides good support for the notion that higher quality leader-member exchange relationships result in higher performance and other positive outcomes. They summarized79 separate studies with a total sample size of 13,885. They found that leader-member exchange quality was positively related to subordinate performance as rated subjectively by the supervisor and also when measured by more objective measures. In addition, the leader-member exchange quality was related to the subordinate’s satisfaction with the supervisor, the subordinate’s level of organizational commitment, and the subordinate’s overall job satisfaction.
