Suki is majoring in Internet Information Systems Technology and is looking for a job as a web specialist
However, he does not have much experience in conducting a professional job search.
Many of Suki’s classmates seem organized, and they bring their planners and schedules with them to
classes. Suki has always been able to manage his life adequately, even though he has never been highly
organized. However, in the last semester of college, he has a demanding schedule preparing for final
exams, graduation, moving, and conducting a job search. Now he wants to find good organizational
tools and strategies to help him manage his job search efficiently so he can find a good job in the
shortest possible time.
What specific tools and strategies would you suggest Suki use to manage his job search efficiently?
Suki thinks he will save time and be more organized if he keeps his Career Management Files
Tracker files on his flash drive instead of using a 3?ring binder. What advice do you have for Suki?
Explain your reasons.
Suki should set up an organized job search headquarters so he can easily lay his hands on anything
he needs and follow up on leads effectively. He could use labeled file folders for his job search
schedules, job lead lists, prospective employer records, and so on. He should prepare a weekly job
search schedule and use a monthly calendar to schedule his activities one or more weeks in advance.
He should record the number of hours and the blocks of time he will spend on his job search each
day.
Suki should also prepare a daily job search plan. He should plan his daily job search activities at
least one day in advance. This gives him clear direction and helps avoid procrastination. Suki should
use Career Action 1-1, Daily Job Search Organizer.
Suki is right about keeping the electronic files he creates in class so he can use them as the starting
point for updated documents. A resume, for example, may be the most complex document many
students will need to create. It’s much faster to update a resume than create one from scratch. The
faster a job-seeker can act, the better the chances of outpacing the competition.
However, Suki should also keep his Career Management Files Tracker documents in a 3-ring binder
for quick access to the documents during this class and during his entire career. And of course, a 3-
ring binder is harder to lose than a flash drive.
As a web developer, Suki also knows that posting important files in a private account at an online
data storage site—in the cloud—is a good idea.
