Learning centers must be designed to support child-directed learning. Therefore, learning centers need to provide a variety of choices and options to support children's a varied needs and interests. In addition, learning centers and the overall room organization should promote activity within and between learning centers. They need to be well organized and have organizational and labeling strategies that children can clearly understand. For younger children, labels might include pictures of the objects, and for older children, labels might consist of the written word. Materials in centers should complement and extend classroom activities and include books and clipboards supportive of literacy connections.
