Charlie and Noelle just met but are quickly becoming friends. Charlie always knew Noelle was a heavy drinker, but initially he was not bothered by it. Now he is becoming increasingly concerned, and he thinks they could be on the road to a fight. Explain the rise of conflict in Charlie and Noelle’s relationship.
What will be an ideal response?
For conflict to occur, there has to be interaction, perception, incompatible goals, and interdependence. Before Charlie and Noelle became good friends, they lacked interdependence. Now that their friendship is growing deeper, issues that were previously unimportant, such as Noelle’s drinking, are becoming sources of conflict. It could also be argued that Charlie and Noelle have incompatible goals: Charlie does not want to drink as much as Noelle does. This would also lead to conflict.
