Describe four healthy ways to manage stress
What will be an ideal response?
Answers may vary but may include 4 of the following:
• Manage the stressors you encounter. Identify and reduce, eliminate, or avoid unnecessary stressors.
• Get adequate rest and sleep. Adequate rest and sleep reduce tension and protect against stress.
• Exercise. Light-to-moderate aerobic exercise, such as jogging, swimming, or cycling, releases endorphins that produce a calming effect up to hours after exercise.
• Use relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques such as progressive relaxation, breathing exercises, visualization, and meditation relax the muscles and the mind, thereby improving coping skills.
• Develop spiritual wellness. Spiritual wellness provides a sense of peace.
• Develop a support network. Having a network of family or friends to talk through problems can alleviate some stressful factors in your life.
• Avoid counterproductive behaviors. Turning to alcohol, drugs, nicotine, caffeine, or disordered eating may provide temporary relief but will ultimately create more stress due to negative effects on health and the potential for addiction.
