Two types of peer-mediated strategies that may be used to help students develop comprehension skills include: (i) reciprocal teaching (RT)—is based on the assumption that comprehension is enhanced when students read a text and then take turns leading small-group discussions with their peers. RT includes questioning about the content read, summarizing the most important information, clarifying concepts that are unclear, and predicting what is occurring. (ii) Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR)—includes four specific strategies: Preview, Click and Clunk, Get the Gist, and Wrap-Up. These strategies are taught to the whole class using expository texts and then cooperative groups implement their roles (i.e., Leader, Clunk Expert, Gist Expert, Announcer); (iii) Think-pair and share—includes thinking on your own about the reading passage, pairing up with a peer to talk about the passage, and sharing your responses with your pair; (iv) PALS—provides a way in which students may take turns as a reading coach and a reader.
