How does the learning theory account for the development of heterosexuality and homosexuality?
What will be an ideal response?
According to the learning theory, people are born sexual, but not heterosexual or homosexual. Only through learning, in terms of rewards and punishments, does one of these behaviors become more likely than the other. As per this theory, if heterosexual experiences are unpleasant or homosexual experiences are pleasant, the likelihood of developing a homosexual orientation is much higher. Take for example a young female rape victim. Her first experience of heterosexual sex is unpleasant so she avoids it and turns to homosexuality. On the other hand, a person who has a pleasant homosexual encounter will feel rewarded by it and therefore this behavior becomes more likely. The opposite would be true in the case of a person who develops a heterosexual orientation, that is, heterosexual sexual experiences are pleasant and rewarding while homosexual experiences are unpleasant.
