This question has multiple parts; be sure to answer each. First, define cognitive dissonance. Next, describe the three conditions that affect the likelihood that a person will attempt to reduce cognitive dissonance. Finally, give an example of a time when you felt cognitive dissonance in your own life, and describe how you dealt with it.

What will be an ideal response?

Cognitive dissonance is the psychological discomfort a person feels when his or her attitude and behavior are incompatible.

People are mostly driven to reduce cognitive dissonance on the basis of three factors: importance, control, and rewards.

(1) Importance. When a lot is at stake (for example, the attitude or behavior is important), a person is motivated to reduce cognitive dissonance.

(2) Control. If the person has no or little control over the situation, he or she is motivated to reduce cognitive dissonance.

(3) Rewards. People are apt to cling to old ideas in the face of new evidence if they have a great deal invested emotionally or financially in those ideas. In this case, people seek to reduce cognitive dissonance.

To reduce cognitive dissonance, a person can change his or her attitude and/or behavior; belittle the importance of inconsistent behavior; or find consonant elements that outweigh the dissonant ones (rationalize).

Students should then give an example of cognitive dissonance from their life and link the example to at least one of the three ways to reduce cognitive dissonance.
