How does a person with Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome differ genetically from a person who has developed basal cell carcinomas from too much exposure to sunlight?
What will be an ideal response?
A person with BCNS has inherited a defective patched gene from one of his/her parents. This defective gene is present in every cell of the body, but only expresses itself in the skin cells. A person who has been exposed to too much sunlight has defective genes only in the skin cells. The person inherited the normal patched gene, but this normal gene became altered in the skin cells as they were exposed to too much UV radiation. All of the other cells of the body would have the normal patched gene.
