Describe the id, ego, and superego and how they are related.

The id is completely unconscious and remains that way throughout one’s lifetime. Since an individual enters the world as a swirling batch of primordial forms of various drives that have a biological foundation, the drives are unlearned and emotionally fueled by the overriding goal of personal survival. The ego has mostly conscious aspects, but also preconscious and unconscious aspects. Over time, the ego becomes increasingly cognitive oriented. The ego is responsible for “testing the waters of reality” to satisfy the demands of the id while simultaneously adding to the ego’s repertoire of adaptive tactics. Superego can call upon the ego to fulfill or pursue either set of expectations, and the ego can be self-activated to serve as a mediator when id urges and superego expectations clash.
