Examples of this approach include the lecture or presentation method, direct instruction, and concept teaching. Cognitivism focuses on changes in behavior but only in relationship to how a person thinks, remembers, and knows. In this approach, learning is acquired by a student linking new information to previous knowledge. Examples of this approach include use of analogies and metaphors, visual aids, and verbal stories. Constructivism focuses on learning as an active process in which the learner links new information to prior knowledge. It is a student-centered approach. In this approach, students are active creators and constructors of their own knowledge. Examples of this approach include classroom discussions, cooperative learning, and group projects.
