The majority of municipal solid waste generated in the United States is stored in sanitary landfills. What are the advantages and disadvantages of storing waste at these sites?

What will be an ideal response?

It is cheap to place waste in a landfill, and landfills can hold large volumes of waste. Landfill space is also readily available in many areas. Once filled, land can be used for other purposes.?On the downside, landfills do release greenhouse gases (unless they are collected) and have a high likelihood of eventually leaking pollutants that will contaminate groundwater. Noise, traffic, and dust are problems at landfills. Also, landfills tackle the problem of waste after it has been generated, so they do nothing to discourage waste production.
