Address why it is difficult to accurately assess the danger those in policing face.
What will be an ideal response?
The major issue surrounding the assessment of danger is agreeing on how to define danger. While the potential for harm certainly exists in policing to determine how “dangerous” policing is we must compare it to other occupations. If danger is measured in terms of “on the job” deaths, policing is not even in the top 10 most dangerous occupations, behind logging workers, fisherman, roofers, and even taxi drivers. Not surprisingly, an overwhelming majority of deaths associated with these industries are accidental. While many police deaths are also the result of accidents, police officers may be victims of homicide at much higher rates than those in occupations. As such, if “danger” is defined in terms of deaths as a result of on the job homicides, policing may rank much higher.
