Describe the two stages of addition instruction

What will be an ideal response?

During the beginning stage, students are taught to solve simple addition problems with concrete or semi-concrete objects representing each addend. Counting, numeral identification, and equality preskills must be mastered to work these problems. Missing addend problems in which an addend must be determined are also presented during this stage. In the advanced stage, when multi-digit addition is taught, students work problems without making concrete representations for each addend. A preskill for solving column addition problems is knowledge of basic addition facts.
