One important theme was the idea that convicts should be isolated and the second was that they should be required to work. Isolation was linked to hospice facilities and work was linked to houses of corrections (also called workhouses). Isolation encouraged penitence and prevented cross-contamination of evil ideas while work not only kept prisoners busy but also provided income for the prisons.
