Compare what birth is like for women in developed countries versus in traditional cultures.
What will be an ideal response?
In developed countries, while many women choose natural childbirth, most births take place in hospitals and mothers and babies have the benefit of medical technologies, such as electronic fetal monitoring and epidurals. Fathers, partners, and other family members are present. Women in traditional cultures have a much different experience. For example, in New Guinea, the Arapesh believe that birth can contaminate others. Therefore, women must be brought to the outskirts of the village to give birth in a place reserved for other unclean activities, such as menstruation and excretion. Overall in traditional cultures, most birth attendants are women, and men are more often forbidden from being present at births.
