Describe three key roles that insects play in just about every land ecosystem
What will be an ideal response?
1 . pollination: The vast majority of flowering plants are pollinated by insects. Close interactions between pollinator and flowering plant lineages likely contributed to an increased rate of speciation that increased the diversity of both.
2 . serve as food source for other animals: Most songbirds nourish their nestlings on an insect diet. Those that migrate often travel long distances in order to nest and raise their young in areas where insect abundance is seasonally high. Aquatic larvae of insects such as dragonflies and mayflies serve as food for trout and other freshwater fish. Most amphibians and reptiles feed mainly on insects.
3 . waste disposal: Insects dispose of wastes and remains. Flies and beetles quickly discover an animal corpse or a pile of feces. They lay their eggs in or on this organic material, which serves as food for their larvae.
