In a well-developed essay, explain the four ways discussed in the textbook that words have

power.

What will be an ideal response?

(1 ) Words have the power to create and label experience. How we label something
affects how others and we react to it. In addition, the label helps us communicate the
experience to others. (2 ) Words have the power to impact thoughts and actions. We
make emotional associations to labels, and sometimes react to objects by how they are
labeled. This is why companies take care in labeling their products, and why different
groups are sensitive about labels that others use when referring to them. (3 ) The power
to shape and reflect culture. Language shapes how we view the world ? we are more
likely to attend to phenomena for which we have words. In addition, cultures have
words for things they find important. (4 ) The power to make and break relationships.
Words are used to gain favorable responses from others and to get to know others.
Thus, they are used to create relationships. Words used in a negative fashion can
likewise damage or end relationships.
