What is behavioral genetics? Define this and explain how this study also relates to the environment.
What will be an ideal response?
Behavior genetics is a branch of genetics that studies the relative contributions of heredity and environment to behavioral and personality characteristics. Genes and environments work in tandem to develop any trait--height, weight, IQ, impulsiveness, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and so on--the sum of which constitutes the person. Behavior geneticists stress that genes do not cause us to behave or feel; they simply facilitate tendencies or dispositions to respond to the environment in one way rather than in another. There are no genes “for” criminal behavior, but there are genes that manufacture proteins that lead to particular traits--such as low empathy, low IQ, and impulsiveness--that increase the probability of criminal behavior when combined with the right environment.
