Briefly outline the two types of skin cancer.
What will be an ideal response?
There are two major types of skin cancer: the non-melanomatous skin cancers and the melanomas. The non-melanomatous are the more benign and consist primarily of the basal cell carcinoma and the squamous cell carcinoma. The basal cell cancer starts in the base layer of the epidermis (outer layer) of the skin. Squamous cell cancers start in the flat cells on the surface of the epidermis. Melanomas start in the pigmented cells (melanocytes) that reside in the basal layer of the epidermis.
