Compare and contrast benign and malignant tumors.
What will be an ideal response?
Responses will vary; basically, the similarities between benign and malignant tumors is the way they develop in the body (through and initiator, promoters, etc.). The differences between these two types of tumors are much greater. Benign tumors resemble normal tissues that surround them; malignant tumors do not. The cells of benign tumors do not break off and metastasize; the cells of malignant tumors do. Benign tumors do not invade surrounding tissues; malignant tumors do. Benign tumors can be controlled by normal methods used to control any tissue growth; malignant tumors cannot. Almost all benign tumors are encased in a fibrous capsule; very few malignant tumors are. Benign tumors are not dangerous unless they interfere with blood flow; malignant tumors are fatal if untreated.
