Identify at least ten steps that will help in developing a multicultural classroom. Summarize why using these steps will lead to a positive multicultural classroom experience for all students
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary, but should include ten from the following list and a summary statement; show respect for cultural differences, consider the cultural resources of your students, use understanding to enhance learning, make decisions that enhance learning, provide time, provide positive role models, use cooperative groups, use hands-on investigations, provide equal opportunities and expectations, use appropriate language, be sensitive in questioning, communicate with parents, and maintain high expectations. Using any or all of these steps will enhance the learning environment and move away from cultural bias. If students see that their particular cultural characteristics are a positive source of classroom experiences, they will become a stronger, more productive member of the class. Other students will learn that there are many diverse ways to tackle a problem and still come up with a viable solution.
