Explain the major aims of British raj policy in India
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER:
The main goal was to develop India into a modern colony by emulating British methods of management, economic development, industrialism, and social structures. Having failed at holding on to their American colonies, the British tried to develop a method for managing their Indian colony that would create an efficient system of government away from home. This was in part based on a strong military presence that depended on Indian sepoy regiments, which vastly outnumbered British regiments. Part of the public relations program was to allow free rein to Christian missionaries, who could promote pro-British changes in the social system. A major transition was the introduction of private property to replace India's traditional, complex landholding structures. This met with some success, depending on the province. With the growth of private estates, British tax collection became easier.
