Describe the three qualities of universal design for learning. How can these principles be applied when designed a curriculum for children with diverse learning needs?
What will be an ideal response?
The first quality of UDL is multiple means of representation. Students are provided with a variety of ways to receive and interpret information within the learning environment. Presenting information to students in different ways can help reduce some of the physical barriers to learning while also reducing sensory, perceptual, and other roadblocks that disabled children may run into within the learning environment. The second quality of UDL is multiple means of engagement. This principle emphasizes the use of different methods to motivate students, challenge their skills, and boost their interest in learning. Educators must make sure that the material they are teaching to students is motivating in order to increase engagement in the learning environment. The final quality of UDL is multiple means of expression. This principle emphasizes the importance of allowing children to reflect their thinking in different ways. By presenting the information to students in different ways and presenting on material that is motivating, we can allow children to reflect their thoughts and learning in ways that show who they are as individuals. These principles can be taken together to form individualized education plans for children in the learning environment. Educators must first take into account the child's current abilities and use this information when designing the most appropriate plan for their education.
