The face of the hammer should be kept clean of nicks and mars. A marred hammer cannot smooth out the surface of the metal as it should. To remove mars, the technician should clamp the hammer in a vice and use a file to remove the mars, taking care to maintain the same curve that was originally in the face. Once the face is clear of imperfections, the edges should be beveled slightly. Once the head is cleaned and beveled, the face should be finish sanded, first with P80 grit, then with P180, and so on, until the face is smoothed with P400. A smooth and mar-free hammer will produce the finish that is desired.
