Artie and Shaw were involved in a same-sex relationship for seven years before they finally married in Connecticut, a state that recognizes same-sex marriage. Artie works for a company that has branches all over the country. Artie has been promoted, but the promotion involves him moving to another state. Artie and Shaw know that they will have to move because Artie is the primary bread-winner and this is such a well-earned accomplishment for Artie's career. Neither Artie nor Shaw knows if the state where they will be moving recognizes same-sex marriages. Is this still a concern for them? I

What will be an ideal response?

Every state in the country, at one point, has addressed the issue of what is "marriage." Discuss the impact of the United States Supreme Court decision of Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) - it established the nationwide right to marry for same-sex couples. By the time the decision was rendered in this case, thirty-six states and the District of Columbia had already legalized same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court finally resolved the issue by holding that state bans on same-sex marriage, or refusals to recognize them, when they were legally recognized in other jurisdictions, violated the Equal Protection Clause and Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
