Nonverbal delivery includes eye contact; facial expressions; posture, gestures, and

movements; and clothing and grooming.

Explain each, discuss what or how it communicates to
the audience, and provide at least one piece of advice from the text that has been or will be
helpful to you in your classroom speeches. Consider the various cultures in your classroom
audience, the layout of the classroom, and your teacher's requirements; discuss the best ways to
adapt nonverbal communication to meet these needs.
What will be an ideal response?

To engage the audience eye contact should be frequent, sustained, and directed to all
members of the audience. Glancing at notes is acceptable; fleeting glances at the audience are
not. Facial expressions should be appropriate for the material being discussed and should arise
naturally. To convey confidence, posture should be relaxed, open, stable, and upright. Hands
should rest lightly on the lectern or should be in some position (e.g. not in pockets) so gestures
can arise naturally. Not all audiences expect or accept the same gestures. To engage rather than
distract the audience and to indicate transitions, movement should be purposeful rather nervous
(such as repetitive motions or swaying). To enhance credibility, clothing should meet the
speaker's needs and the audience's expectations. Jewelry should be subtle, and unless required
by one's religion, hats should not obscure the eyes.
