Ans: The notational system that is used to describe mixed research designs has many components. Mixed research designs vary in terms of the predominance of one or none of the research designs (quantitative or qualitative) as well as the timing of the collection of the data through quantitative and qualitative methods. To begin with, the two methodologies are abbreviated as “quan” and “qual”. In the design, if one methodology is relied on more than another methodology it is indicated in all capital letters (e.g., QUAN, QUAL); and the secondary method is indicated with lowercase letters (e.g. quan, qual). Next, the order in which the quantitative and qualitative data are collected is indicated. If the data are collected at about the same time, a plus sign “+” is put between the descriptors of the methodologies. If the data are collected at different periods of time, an arrow is placed after the method that collected the first set of data, pointing to the method through which the second set of data were collected. So a QUAN+qual design would be one in which quantitative methods predominated but qualitative data were collected at approximately the same time.
