According to Bowlby and Ainsworth, why are David’s and Chelsea’s attachment styles different?
What will be an ideal response?
The twins have different attachment styles because their mother treats them differently and because they have developed different relationships with her. Secure attachment styles develop when parents are warm and responsive to children’s needs, as David’s mother seems to be with him. Ambivalent or avoidant attachment styles develop when parents do not develop a warm emotional environment with their children and are not supportive of their needs. This is demonstrated in the described relationship between Chelsea and her mother in which Chelsea’s mother does not seem emotionally supportive of her.
