What is the current status of the rules covering drivers' hours of service?
As of January 3, 2004, the FMCSA's driving time regulations will permit drivers to drive a maximum of 11 hours after being off duty for 10 consecutive hours. A driver is permitted to be on duty a maximum of 14 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty. In addition, no driver can drive after accumulating 60 hours on duty in 7 consecutive days, or 70 hours in 8 consecutive days. (Note: As of this writing, a U.S. federal court had overturned the new driving rules and gave FMCSA 45 days to have them reinstated. This chapter will assume that the FMCSA will be successful at reinstating the revised rules.)
