Chapter 12 discusses five possible strategies for gaining the attention of an audience:
offering a question, arousing the curiosity of the audience, stimulating the audience's
imagination, promising the audience something beneficial, and amusing the audience.
Questions can be either direct or rhetorical, and can get the audience thinking about your
topic. One must be sure the question is neither embarrassing nor irrelevant to the speech topic.
Second, suspense can be used to arose an audience's curiosity. A third strategy, promising
something beneficial to listeners, can be especially effective as listeners are very interested in
finding out how a speech may directly impact them.
