Describe sick building syndrome and how it can come about with modern construction methods

What will be an ideal response?

In order to conserve energy and costs, construction techniques and materials have been developed that
keep heat energy inside during the winter and keep cool air within buildings during the summer. Wellsealed
buildings are energy-efficient and do not allow for much air exchange with the outdoors. What
makes the lack of air exchange a problem is that concentrations of potentially harmful airborne
chemical are constantly introduced into indoor air. These chemicals are called volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) and are emitted from numerous products including those used to furnish interiors
and those found in office products.
