A stereotype is a fixed belief held by an individual that classifies a group of people with a similar characteristic as alike. Stereotypes allow people to respond to complex information and make meaning from it by either generalizing it, or putting a blanket category around it. It is a way of processing information quickly.
In a small way, stereotypes can be useful. Stereotypes can reduce uncertainty in some situations because they provide partial information to us about others. For example, if you see some people wearing hijabs, as a Muslim woman, you would feel comfortable sitting near them, but as a non-Muslim you could falsely presume and then avoid them based on unsubstantiated allegations.
