Ten-month-old Antonio is being treated for an avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. Describe this disorder in terms of developmental course; etiology; assessment and diagnosis; and intervention
What will be an ideal response?
• Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder – not eating enough for normal growth and development
• Developmental course – typically children learn how to coordinate internal processes such as swallowing with relational processes (communication and reciprocity). By about 4-6 months of age, infants and parents have developed a pattern of positive interactions surrounding feeding. Patterns of picky eating are common and usually not a reason for concern.
• Etiology – developmental delays (80% of children with developmental delays have feeding problems), temperament (reactivity, over or under arousal), parental mental health or eating issues
• Assessment and diagnosis – information about both child and caregiver are gathered through interviews and observations
• Intervention – focused on physiological, psychological, and environmental factors; three factors – nutritional monitoring, physiological and environmental changes, and behavioral techniques
