The mucous membrane that covers the anterior surface of the eyeball and merges with the cornea at the limbus is called the

a. bulbar conjunctiva. c. palpebral conjunctiva.
b. corneal conjunctiva. d. scleral conjunctiva.

A
The exposed part of the eye has a transparent protective covering, the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a thin mucous membrane folded like an envelope between the eyelids and the eyeball. The palpebral conjunctiva lines the interior surface of the lids and is clear, with many small blood vessels. Contiguous with the palpebral conjunctiva is the bulbar conjunctiva which folds back over the anterior surface of the eyeball and merges with the cornea at the limbus (the junction of the cornea and the sclera). The conjunctiva contains blood vessels and pain receptors that respond quickly to outside insult. There are no structures called the corneal and scleral conjunctiva.
