Social workers can engage in agency or community assessment through surveys of key community informants from various public and private sectors, attendance at public forums, and surveys of community residents (or existing community data). The ways in which these activities will “play out” depend on the types of community. Six types of communities are listed below:
• Integral—characterized by a high level of resident participation in community affairs both in that community and in surrounding areas.
• Parochial—a self-contained community where there is interaction and stability but no external focus.
