What are two significant cultural costs that critics of development propose? Give examples of each to illustrate your answer.
What will be an ideal response?
The first cost is that of Westernization or homogenization. Critics argue that development is actually an invention of the West and ideas about material prosperity and success are Western notions that are being imposed on non-Western nations who had quite different views about appropriate standards of living. Another aspect of this is the rapid spread of Western foods, music, languages, and clothing. A second major cultural cost is the deteriorations in social connectedness and personal character. As people leave rural farming lives and move to factories in the city specialization requires them to compete in areas where they had traditionally cooperated. People have also become more economically dependent on one another as a result of specialization.
