Explain the differences between retrograde amnesia, anterograde amnesia, alcohol amnesic syndrome, and Alzheimer's disease.
What will be an ideal response?
Retrograde amnesia occurs when a person loses their memory for information prior to an injury. For instance, someone involved in a car accident may not be able to recall the events of that day prior to the accident. Anterograde amnesia occurs when new memories can no longer be formed. This type of amnesia is more common than retrograde amnesia and generally occurs after a major trauma to the brain damages or destroys parts of it. Alcohol amnesic syndrome occurs when there has been brain damage due to thiamine deficiency, which follows excessive consumption of alcohol over many years. A person with this disorder will often repeat the same story over and over, and be unable to learn new information. Alzheimer's disease involves severe and widespread changes in the brain that lead to progressive declines in mental skills, including memory.
